Hey Killer, where did you go?
05 Feb 2012, 09:11

For a website shared hosting is perfect for me.
05 Feb 2012, 09:11
by TheKiller »
And i had a shared webhost on 1.99 $ a month. A separate gamehosting server that was about 2$ (i set it to 8 slots and locked it for that ammount, so that ppls could enter with via a password)

and also shared hosting is pretty regularly exploited.

shared hosting doesn't give you root. i want to be able to set up various development environments that i need, not just the usual LAMP stack (how else can I see how well nginx runs my code, or how well my code works with postgres?)
05 Feb 2012, 08:04

and shared hosting is for people that do just web development. my box ends up running my connection to several irc networks, running my irc bot, the occasional game server, and also has several different HTTPD configurations in place

rackspace is also notoriously sketchy. ugh.
05 Feb 2012, 05:05
by TheKiller »
Why do you guys need an entire server for ? o-O Isnt shared hosting good enough for you ?

I didn't really want to pay for what I use a server for, just a test site, no traffic. I'll keep using those free ones until I can build another Linux server here at the house.

by topdown »
Just keep an eye on your bandwidth, thats where they get you in the clouds.
04 Feb 2012, 23:33
by topdown »
Rackspace starts at like 11.00 a month for a cloud instance.
04 Feb 2012, 23:32
by topdown »
If you know how to configure servers cloud can be cheap for just dev work where you have little to no traffic

Virtually no restrictions either - if you can get it to run, it's legal, and you have the resources for it, have at it
04 Feb 2012, 18:25
by Sniper_E »
No way! I paid $99 a month to have a server like that. You must know someone that knows someone. That is awesome.

my host's $20/mo, but I get an entire linix server to play with :3
04 Feb 2012, 17:03
by TheKiller »
Why dont you just get a paid host? I know a pretty good one for just 1.99$ a month. If you want i will create a ftp and a sql user for you on my host. i have unlimited bandwidth and disk space anyways..

I need to build another laptop server here at the house again and get my sniper-ed.com back up.
